MY FAVORITE THINGS

Tuesday, November 30

"Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things"
"The Sound of Music"

Love the song, have watched the movie more than 20 times for sure. The things above aren't exactly my favorite things. When I think of my fav things, here's what comes to mind. Unfortunately unlike Oprah- I don't think anyone's getting a free anything.

List Favs subject to change, of course

Longing for earrings

Really like this feature from WhoWhatWear.

I generally stay away from earrings this long cos I wear alot of scarves and they tend to get tangled up in everything.  I was also worried that they might just be a little too much. However, on second look, I'm really liking these and set out to find some cascading earrings of my own.

1- garnet, jade and dyed chalcedony by $89 ; 2 - Ivory Cream Swarovski perl Gold Earrings by $55; 3 - Grapes of Wrath silver salvaged bullet earring by $24; 4 - Cherry Quartz Earrings by $32; 5 - Antique Silver Fan Earrings by $24; 6- Arshia by $172; 7- Godiva Earrings by $25; 8 - gold plated herringbone chain drapes from vintage French coin by $68; 9 - Deep Blue Vintage Jewel brass leaf earrings by $19.95.

POKER? Yes really

A few years ago, my girlfriends and I were totally and completely obsessed with all things Poker, specifically Texas Hold 'Em.  It probably started with Bravo's Celebrity Poker show. Then we started watching professionals playing, we got poker sets, held poker nights and then at some point I guess we got too busy or too broke to keep up.
Last night, after perhaps too much eating, I found myself up at the weird hour of let's say 3am-ish. And that's when I realized there were over 3 channels running poker games at the same time. 1 of them featuring my all time fav:  Phil Ivey.  Even for the newest poker fan, this guy needs no introduction. Not gonna run down his ridiculously impressive resume or earnings. Just google him.

Phil Ivey (currently holds 8 World series of Poker bracelets)

So, where am I going with all this. Nowhere really, except- I saw these and thought they would look amazing somewhere in my box of an apartment. But where? and why? It surey does remind me of when I fancied myself a poker player.

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING

    Thursday, November 25

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Still watching the game and getting over all the food I had.

I know its kinda sad, but I for the first time ever made a really successful Mac & Cheese.  I kept feeling guilty about all the butter and cheese and wanted to cut back on bacon etc, but the hubby won't let me. I guess if you're gonna go there, then you might as well take it all the way there. Peep the recipe down below:

Bacon, Gruyere and Cheddar Mac N’ Cheese
    Serve 4-6
    Ingredients:
    1 teaspoon olive oil
1 pound Cavatappi or elbow pasta (or whatever you like)
    ½ pound sliced smoked bacon
1 ½ cups fresh white breadcrumbs (pulse bread in food processor)
    ½ cup grated Parmesan
    8 tablespoons butter
    1 tsp rosemary, diced-optional
    1 tsp thyme, diced-optional
    ¼ cup minced shallots
    ½ cup flour
    1 quart whole milk
    6 ounces Gruyere cheese, grated
8 ounces extra-sharp Cheddar cheese, grated
    ½ teaspoon pepper
    1 teaspoon salt
    ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
    ¼ tsp smoked paprika-optional

Cook pasta according to directions. Cook bacon and drain on paper towels. Keep bacon fat in pan. Crumble bacon when cool.
Topping: Combine breadcrumbs, crumbled bacon, Parmesan, rosemary, thyme and 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Set aside.
Preheat oven to 375. Sauté shallots over low heat in bacon fat for one minute. Add remaining 6 tablespoons of butter and continue to sauté shallots until translucent. Add flour and continue to cook for 1-2 minutes. Increase heat to medium while stirring constantly with a whisk and add milk. Cook until sauce is thickened and remove from heat then add salt, pepper, nutmeg, smoked paprika, Gruyere and cheddar. Taste and adjust salt and pepper if necessary. Stir in pasta and pour into baking dish. Sprinkle topping and cover with foil, bake 15 minutes. Remove foil and continue baking until sauce is bubbly and topping is brown. I believe that it tastes even better the next day. If you have time, prepare it a day ahead (minus breadcrumbs) and bake before serving.

Yup, its all kinds of bad and tastes all kinds of good.  Recipe courtesy of The Dabble.
We should shortly be back to our regularly scheduled program. Wonder why I'm feeling sleepy.

    Heading out for Thanksgiving visits

    One Look, 2 ways

    Wednesday, November 24

    Remember this look?

    http://miaandmaki.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/sarah_jessica_parker_yellow-vest.jpg

Sarah Jessica Parker rocked this look in first Sex and City movie. I liked it, but wasn't in love with it. I think the look below is more me, I find it a little more muted and classic.  It's actually a vintage 1960's 2 piece dress but still manages to look like a more NOW than the one above. Oh.... and it's only $42.

    by Scottleinacanoe   $42

To make it more season/weather appropriate, I'll add a well fitting black turtleneck underneath.

This is about YOU, I'm looking at YOU

        Bad hair day

        Sunday, November 21

So, I decided to stop geting relaxers over 6months ago now. This basically means that i have had to relearn how to treat and take care of my hair. While for the most part, its been a fun and interesting journey, I have had those days where I seriously have no clue as to what to do.  Those are the days when I need to simply cover my head and wait for the storm to pass. And of course, a baseball cap just won't do.

I've not been a big fan of these despite seeing them on tons of celebs lately, but for some reason its slowly growing on me. Still a little torn, but these I like: THE TURBAN

Clockwise, L-R: velvet green turban $40 by ; gold studded turban $13 by ; winter grey turban $15 by ; faux leather turban $15 by

Saving $$$ on that special day

This goes out to all the ladies who entered the WEDDING DRESS GIVEAWAY. That giveaway is now over and we'll find out tomorrow who gets the dress. But I thought I should share some things I learned last year. Weddings can so easily get out of hand not just emotionally or physically but mostly financially. I realized early that I had to make some concessions if I was going to have any chance of avoiding utter brokedom.  At the same time, I didn't want to sacrifice style for a day that was that important.
Here's a few things I was able to do and some of the resources Etsy provided me.

Sometimes you can make the biggest impact with smallest details.

We filled mason jars with candy the color of our wedding colors, and got handcrafted soaps wrapped in fabric of our choice with little personalized thank you tags.

trio blue mason jars $19 by , Ball Mason jar $3 by , 3 vintage Kerr Mason jars $25 by

We actually purchased the pdf design of table numbers and printed them ourselves. Saved us a lot of money, not necessarily time. If you can't be bothered with printing and cutting, you can get a custom one made for you from a multitude of vendors.
